Nathelda Pauline Crain Woods, a resident of Franklinton, passed away Dec. 2, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Maud and Willie B. Crain. Nathelda was affectionately known as Nell.

Nell had a variety of life experiences. She finished high school at Washington Parish Training School. Afterwards, she attended Southern University.

Nell was a very talented vocalist and sang for Gov. Earl K. Long. She sang on the governor’s weekly program while in college. Nell was a very well known soprano. She traveled all over the country, singing opera.

Nell lived in New Orleans for some time and was married to Thomas Clarence Woods and later moved back to Franklinton. She was a member of Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness. She also worked as a substitute teacher for Washington Parish Schools. She loved to cook, dance, sing and was very talented at growing plants.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Mark (Sabrina) Woods of Franklinton; one brother, Richard (Bernice) Crain of Cleveland, Ohio; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Woods; parents, Maud and Willie B. Crain; and siblings, Jessie Barquet, Robert Walter Crain, Benjamin D. Crain, Loyce Harris, Frankie Crain Smith and Willie Benjamin Crain.

The drive-through viewing was 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness, with the Rev. Terrence August officiating. Interment will be at Sweet Home Cemetery.
