Dear Editor,
Our dear friend, Bill Nielsen, CEO of “Nielsen’s Farmacy,” a community garden on South Columbia Street, tells me he has a pound of White Lady turnip seed sprouting on the hillside just north of his drugstore building.
His research reveals that there are 220,000 turnip seed in a pound (wow!), and my memory is that the last census showed Bogalusa with a total of 10,659 residents.
I’ve lost my slide rule, but my wife’s pocket calculator indicates that a complete germination would yield 20 turnips for each citizen of our community.
If you like turnips, you’re in for some good chow in January and February — or maybe as early as Christmas.
As the waitress says, “Enjoy!”
