After a shutout win at Nicholls and come-from behind victory at Louisiana Tech, Haylli Roe and Nadine Maher were named Southland Conference Players of the Week for the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Roe, a sophomore, was the Southland’s Defensive Player of the Week highlighted by her game-winning goal in the Lady Lions’ (5-5-1, 3-2-1 Southland) 2-1 win over Louisiana Tech Sunday. The Humble, Texas native scored in the 60th minute from the far side nearly 30 yards out to give SLU the lead for good.
Roe is the second SLU defender to receive the league’s weekly defensive honor this season along with senior Darby Gillette (Sept. 21)
Maher, a senior, was tabbed the conference’s Keeper of the Week after leading the Lady Lions to a shutout Friday at Nicholls, 1-0. The Dublin Ireland faced 16 shots for the two matches against Nicholls and Tech with four saves recording her second shutout of the season. Maher, the reigning Southland Tournament MVP, has allowed just five goals in the last seven matches.
Tuesday marks the second time that Maher has earned the award in her career. The Lady Lions’ keeper also received the honor back on March 30 with teammate Dalton Fish after SLU recorded back-to-back shutouts on the road at UIW and Abilene Christian.
Roe, Maher and the Lady Lions will be back in action Friday at home against McNeese (8-3-1, 5-1-0 Southland) at 7:05 p.m.
