Washington Parish President Richard “Ned” Thomas Jr. is asking residents to wear a face mask if they have not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Thomas released a statement Thursday detailing the recommendation. The statement reads:

“Because there is a change in trend from cases decreasing to cases increasing, we must remind ourselves of the cautions we need to take to stay safe during this epidemic. Since Monday, July 19, the Louisiana Department of Health is reporting 91 new cases for Washington Parish. Our percent positivity rate has risen from 1.3 to 10.8 since June 3.

“Due to this increase, I am strongly encouraging citizens not fully vaccinated to wear a face covering over their nose and mouth when entering a local government building and private business establishment. Doing this will help stop the spread of the virus and I also ask that they strongly consider getting the vaccination to protect themselves, their families and our community.

“Our efforts were effective before to decrease the numbers, therefore I believe we are again capable of doing our part to help stop the spread.”
