New exhibit at museum
The Varnado Store Museum is assembling a new exhibit to be displayed during July and August. The exhibit is called “Community Heroes Through the Years.” If you have photos, scrapbooks, documents, stories, clothing or other items about those individuals or groups who have given unselfishly to benefit our communities during hard and good times, please share them on loan to the museum for this special exhibit. We wish to honor soldiers, guardsmen, firemen, policemen, medical persons, charitable groups, disaster teams, teachers, etc., who have become our heroes in the past and the present. The museum will be open on the weekends (except for the Fourth of July weekend) and staff will be working in the museum on Wednesday, July 7, and Thursday, July 8. Bring any items you wish to display by the museum at one of those times.

Franklinton fireworks
Join the Town of Franklinton on Saturday, July 3, for its Independence Day celebration, with a fireworks show at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds at 9 p.m.

Bush gospel singing
Enjoy flag waving and gospel singing at the Bush Recreational Center (down the road from the Bush Community Center off Louisiana Highway 41) on Saturday, July 3, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. This event will then continue on the first Saturday of every month, at the same time.

School supply give-away
There will be a school supply give-away on Friday, July 30, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Town of Franklinton town hall, for students in pre-K through 12th grade. School supply donations can be dropped off at the town hall, 301 11th Ave., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Monetary donations can be made out to “Cash” or by calling the following phone numbers: 985-515-0268, 985-516-0001 or 985-515-7827.

Run for tourism commission
The Washington Parish Tourism Commission is seeking interested citizens to fill an open commission seat. Consider spending a few hours each month evaluating matter that helps shape the future of tourism in our community. Commission Members serve a three-year term. Applicants must be a resident of Washington Parish at least 18 years of age. This is a volunteer position.
