Officials with the Washington Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness issued an update Wednesday morning about the approach of Hurricane Zeta.

The update, which was posted to the agency’s Facebook page, stated the following:

“Hurricane Zeta is forecast to make landfall along the Southeast Louisiana coast this (Wednesday) afternoon as a Category 2 hurricane. Heavy rainfall, storm surge, strong to potentially damaging winds, and a few tornadoes can be expected as Zeta passes through the area this afternoon and evening.

“Strong to potentially damaging winds are expected this afternoon and evening. The strongest winds will occur closest to the storms center and well to the east. Hurricane force winds are expected across parts of southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi, with the strongest winds across areas nearest Zeta’s track. Power outages will be possible, along with damage to trees, power lines and structures. Secure loose outdoor household items that could blow around and cause property damage. All preparations should be completed.

“A hurricane warning has been issued for Washington Parish, which means hurricane-force winds are expected somewhere within this area within the next 36 hours.”
