Calvin Rushell Vernon Sr. entered this world on Oct. 7, 1952, to the late William Grutch Vernon and Doretha Magee Vernon in Franklinton. He departed this life on Sept. 27, 2020, at Texas Health Huguley Hospital.
Calvin was a graduate of Franklinton High School in Franklinton. After graduating high school, he married his soul mate, Gwendolyn Washington, also of Franklinton. Two children were born, Taujuana Nichelle Vernon and Calvin R. Vernon Jr. Calvin worked at Dairyman Inc., prior to entering the military in 1971. After eight years of service, he decided to enter the public sector, working at the U.S. Postal Service until retirement in 2012.
Before retirement, he loved gardening and marathon running. He was an avid chess player, enjoyed traveling especially cruising with friends, and absolutely loved attending his grandson’s baseball games even traveling out of state to support him. Lately his favorite pass time included walking with neighborhood friends, eating, and then reclining in his favorite chair to watch western repeats.
He was effectually known by his wife as her Boo Boo Kitty and her Tiger, and to others as Bub, Bubba, Uncle Calvin and “Uncle Bub or Uncle Bubba.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, William G. Vernon and Doretha Magee Vernon; daughter, Taujuana N. Vernon; brother, William Vernon Jr.; sister, Cuba N. Watson and Cheryl Vernon Warren.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories: his wife, Gwendolyn J. Vernon; son, Calvin R. Vernon Jr. (April, whom he called his daughter and lovingly nicknamed “Baby G”); sister, Toni Vernon Glasper of Mansfield, Texas; brother, Rondy Vernon Sr. of Franklinton; one grandchild, Channing R. Vernon; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
