405 new cases, 34 new deaths reported Tuesday

The state of Louisiana reported more cases and deaths Tuesday, although the number of hospitalizations and ventilators in use fell, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Louisiana Department of Health.

The state said Tuesday that there had been 40,746 cases of COVID-19 reported, with 2,724 deaths. On Monday, there had been 40,341 cases and 2,690 deaths reported.

The increase between Monday’s statewide update and Tuesday’s update was an additional 405 cases and an additional 34 deaths.

The LDH said at noon Tuesday that the state had 639 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and 83 of those patients required ventilators. On Monday, the state reported 661 hospitalizations and 86 ventilators in use.

Washington Parish had reported 437 cases and 38 deaths, according to the Tuesday update. On Monday, the parish had reported 433 cases and 38 deaths.

There had been 1,776 cases in St. Tammany Parish, with 159 deaths (an additional 12 cases and one additional death compared to Monday), and 883 cases in Tangipahoa Parish, with 37 deaths (an additional 15 cases and two additional deaths compared to Monday).

Washington Parish had reported 4,085 COVID-19 tests, as of Tuesday’s update — an increase of 58 tests compared to Monday’s report.

In Tuesday’s update, the LDH said that 21,932 tests had been reported from the state laboratory, and an additional 371,201 tests had been reported from commercial laboratories — a total of 393,133 tests. The state had reported a total of 387,370 tests in Monday’s update — a difference of 5,673 tests.

The LDH reported Tuesday that there are 31,728 presumed recovered cases of COVID-19, as of its May 31 update.

A person is presumed to have recovered if:

  • It has been more than 14 days, since he/she tested positive and he/she is not currently in the hospital or deceased (when hospital status is known), or
  • It has been more than 21 days, since he/she tested positive and he/she is not deceased (when hospital status is unknown).

The previous report was released on May 24, with 28,700 presumed recovered cases — a difference of 3,028 additional recoveries.
