On Thursday, Oct. 17, in Abita Springs, generous sponsors came together for a day of golf and fun that raised nearly a quarter-million dollars for United Way of Southeast Louisiana, at the International Paper Bogalusa Mill’s sixth annual John Willis Memorial Golf Tournament.

Sponsors gave $144,153, which International Paper will match 60 percent to reach the record high of $230,644. With the IP match, the tournament has now raised more than $613,730 for local charitable causes since it began in 2014.

“We started this tournament six years ago in an effort to help make a difference in our community,” said Bernie Chascin, Bogalusa Mill manager. “Thank you to everyone who played a part in this great event. Thanks especially to United Way SELA for the work they do, fighting for the health, education and financial security of every person in Washington Parish. They are the ones making a real difference in our community.”

In 2018, the mill renamed its annual charity golf tournament in memory of John Willis, who served as the mill’s Purchasing Manager for 58 years.
