A Bogalusa man was recently arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of an 8-month-old girl, according to Maj. Wendell O’Berry of the Bogalusa Police Department.

O’Berry said that the BPD responded to the Our Lady of the Angels Hospital emergency room on Wednesday, Aug. 14, in reference to an unresponsive 8-month-old female infant. The child died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

“Based on information obtained at the hospital, and from speaking with family members, it was believed that the death was caused due to non-accidental injuries,” O’Berry said. “It was also determined that the child had been left by the mother for a short time that evening in the care of her boyfriend, Tyrease Brumfield.”

O’Berry said that a criminal investigation was initiated, and an autopsy was performed the following day. It was determined by the medical examiner that the child died of injuries caused by blunt-force trauma, and her death was ruled a homicide, he said.

Investigators determined the child was under the Brumfield’s supervision when she received the injuries, O’Berry said.

On Thursday, Aug. 15, Brumfield was arrested for first-degree murder in the death of this child, and placed into the custody of the Washington Parish Jail.

O’Berry said that additional names and information are not being released at this time, as the investigation is ongoing.
