Marah Jones

Marah Nell Magee Jones passed away June 30, 2019 — five days shy of her 92nd birthday — at Ollie Steele Burden Manor in Baton Rouge. She was born July 5, 1927, in Franklinton, to Alma Waller Magee and Hunter E. Magee. She was their only child. Although she grew up in Franklinton, she attended her senior year and then graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1944. There, she met and later married Vernon D. Jones, her husband of 62 years.

Besides being a wife and mother of three, she began her employment at Burris Bros. in Franklinton. Later, in Bogalusa, she served as bookkeeper and then office manager of Bogalusa Schools Federal Credit Union for more than 50 years until it merged with New Orleans Firemen’s Federal Credit Union. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bogalusa. Through the years, she had been a member of various organizations such as the Washington Parish Art Association and the Business and Professional Women’s Federation.

She is preceded in death by her husband and by her son, Edward Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Jones (Gary) Bothe; one son, Farrell W. Jones of Baton Rouge; three grandchildren, Eli G. Bothe, Leah Bothe (Ed) Manning, Alexander J. Jones; and one great grandchild, Audrey Manning.

Services will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa, with visitation Thursday, July 4, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday, July 5, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., with services to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be at the Ellis Cemetery in Franklinton.
