Bogalusa resident gets ‘Name of Fame’ award

The Louisiana Retired Teachers Association (LRTA) presented Bogalusa resident Lazette Watterson with the Name of Fame award at its Spring Meeting on April 30. The Name of Fame award is presented to an active LRTA member who is involved in the organization.
Watterson earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Library Science from Southern University, where she is a life member of the Alumni Association. She also has a master’s +30 degree from Southeastern Louisiana University.
Watterson began her career as a Title 1 math teacher at Terrace Elementary School. She went on to teach fifth grade at Columbia Street Elementary School. Watterson was a fifth and sixth grade math teacher at Columbia Street Magnet School where she later became principal. Watterson also served as principal at Long Avenue Elementary School, Terrace Elementary School and Pleasant Hill Elementary School.
Watterson currently serves as the LRTA second vice president. As second vice president, she is responsible for working with the district second vice presidents on program promotion. Watterson previously served as president for District III, which encompasses Washington, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Livingston and St. Helena parishes.
Not only is she very active with LRTA, Watterson regularly volunteers within her community. She is a volunteer with Bogalusa City Schools, Northshore Community College’s YouthBuild program, Relay for Life and the local food bank. She is also an active member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church. In her spare time, Watterson enjoys cooking, traveling and volunteering.
The Louisiana Retired Teachers Association is a nonprofit organization that is devoted to protecting and enhancing benefits for individuals receiving retirement benefits from the Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana.
