AARP Bogalusa Chapter 4032 and AARP Louisiana and its partners are gearing up for the AARP’s national campaign — “I Pledge to Be the Difference and VOTE” — in the upcoming election this year.

AARP Bogalusa Chapter 4032, the Washington Parish Council on Aging, the Bogalusa Senior Citizens Center, the Washington Parish NAACP, and the Washington Men’s Club will be presenting an Election 2018 City of Bogalusa — Mayoral Candidate Forum.

The forum is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Washington Parish Council on Aging’s Senior Citizens Center, located at 603 Willis Ave. in Bogalusa. All mayoral candidates have been invited. Chuck Hughes, of Talley, Anthony, Hughes and Knight, will be the moderator for the forum.

Emma Dixon, president of the Bogalusa chapter said the forum will be a great success.

“We are very pleased to partner with the Council on Aging, NAACP, and the Men’s Club for this event,” Dixon said. “This election is of paramount importance to the future of the City of Bogalusa and special thanks to Nancy McBeth, executive director of the Council on Aging for access to the Senior Center facility and for recommending scheduling of the forum at 2 p.m., to assist senior citizens in participating by providing transportation to the event.

“AARP recognizes the importance to the power of the ‘50-plus Vote,’ and is targeting the maximum participation of this group in the upcoming elections. Also, thanks to Willene Ellzey, AARP President Emeritus and Council on Aging board member for assisting with planning this event. Ellzey is a living example of the AARP motto ‘Life Reimagined.’”

Dixon said that AARP Bogalusa is also glad to be a fifth year national partner of the NonProfit VOTE for National Voter Registration Day, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Walmart in Bogalusa.

Voter registration applications will be available for outreach to local citizens to assist them in registering to vote. As an active partner of NonProfit Vote, AARP will also utilize the Voter Engagement Toolkit and the National Voter Registration Day Stickers and posters.

Plans are to distribute National Voter Registration Day posters throughout the city of Bogalusa and conduct a “Get Out the Vote” phone bank on the November election day, Dixon said.
