In January of 2018, members of the Bogalusa Police Benevolence Association decided to assist local students by offering three $500 scholarships to local high school graduates. Members of the association all agreed the scholarships should be in memory of retired Assistant Chief John Hartzog Sr.
Hartzog joined the Bogalusa Police Department in 1961 and retired as Assistant Chief in 1991. Hartzog was a founding member of the Bogalusa Police Benevolence Association. Hartzog was very instrumental in the planning and building of the Bogalusa Police Association lodge. Hartzog had a strong desire to see that high school students in our community were given opportunities for success.
The Bogalusa Police Benevolence Association conducted a fundraiser raffle supporting the John Hartzog Sr. scholarship fund. On Wednesday, May 23, the drawing for the raffle was held at Bogalusa City Hall. Several members of the Hartzog family were present. John Hartzog III and Johnna Hartzog, grandchildren of John Hartzog Sr., pulled the winning ticket. The winner of the raffle was Cathy Magee from Franklinton.
The Bogalusa Police Benevolence Association and members of the Hartzog Family would like to thank all individuals who supported this worthy cause.
