Cemetery concerns expressed

Cemeteries and fire trucks were among the topics that citizens discussed during public participation in Tuesday’s meeting of the Bogalusa City Council.

First up was Terry “Foots” Quinn, who bemoaned the fact that “the property tax is coming up.” At stake is the city employees’ retirement system.

Councilman Teddy Drummond said, “It’s hard not to pay these people their retirement.”

Mayor Wendy Perrette said any citizens could call Director of Administration Stacy Smith to find out their taxes for this year.

Then, both Henry Rayford and Richard Brister said they were concerned that Doyle Creel had parked an old, allegedly untagged and unlicensed fire truck, to serve as an advertisement for Bogalusa Grill.

Councilman Brian McCree said, “It sounds like Doyle Creel is never going to move the truck. He’s not in compliance.”

Councilwoman Tamira Smith said she was not so sure about whether the truck was out of compliance, and Perrette noted that the location was outside of city limits, anyway.

Chester Abram, who said he has worked at both local cemeteries for 30 years, rose to express his concerns that by state and local law at least two feet of soil must be on top of the content in a grave. He said that he has seen three or four people buried in the Bogalusa Cemetery whose graves were not in compliance.

“This must stop at once,” he said.

Councilman Doug Ritchie, who recently retired from Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home, said, “Families must hold the funeral homes responsible.”

Also during Tuesday’s meeting, the council unanimously voted to re-enact the Comprehensive Building Regulations for the city, relative to the Building Code, and to provide for related matters.

The council also introduced a handful of ordinances. One would authorize Nobles Construction to re-subdivide the Brookwood Subdivision.

A second would authorize the mayor to enter into an agreement between the Bogalusa City Jail and Ally Telecom Group, LLC.

The third would authorize the mayor to accept the low bidder for two inches of asphalt 2,971 L.F. overlay of roadway for Alabama Avenue, Georgia Avenue, and Montgomery Street.

The fourth would authorize the mayor to enter into a Supplemental Agreement for the Number 10 Runway 18 obstruction removal/clearing Part 2 at George R. Carr Memorial Airport.

The fifth would authorize the mayor to enter into a Supplemental Agreement Number 11 Inspection and Construction for the Number 10 Runway 18 obstruction removal/clearing Part 2 at George R. Carr Memorial Airport.

Those ordinances will all be up for approval at the April 3 council meeting.
