Marietta Weary Scott, beloved daughter of H.J. Weary and Clarenda Dunn Weary, was born in Sandy Hook, Miss., on Dec 3, 1936, and grew up on Avenue R in Bogalusa.
Marietta, affectionately known as “Madam” by family and close friends, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Elk Grove, Calif., on March 13, 2018, at 3:30 p.m.
Marietta was preceded in death by her parents, H.J. and Clarenda; siblings, Eugene Weary, Malcolm “Ted” Weary, Eula Mae “Goo” Weary Hollis, Albert Earl “Syrup” Weary, and loving husband Anderson “Andy” Scott Jr.
Marietta, honor student, member of the Spartans Marching and Concert bands (clarinet), first-place recipient of the “Orations By Me” competition (1952-1956), recipient of the Crown Zellerbach Scholarship, graduated salutatorian from Central Memorial High School in 1956. In 1960, she earned a BA from Southern University, in Baton Rouge, and accepted her first teaching position as an English professor at Southern in the fall of 1960 through 1964.
In 1964, she married Anderson “Andy” Scott Jr. and the couple settled in Sacramento, Calif., where Marietta continued her career as an English professor in the Los Rios College District for 36 years. Together, they raised two outstanding young men, Steven and David, and in 2008, she wrote the book “I Brought You Into This World,” chronicling their successful parenting skills.
Marietta had many outstanding accomplishments in her career. She was very active in her community and with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, both locally and nationally. She loved to play bridge and won many local and national tournaments. She also loved to travel and had visited countries in all the continents except Africa and Australia. Marietta was the kind of person who would give anyone — even strangers — the shirt off her back if they needed it.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: two beloved sons, Dr. Steven Harvey Scott, DDS, of Sacramento, and David Todd Scott of Santa Clara, Calif., and one grandson, Wesley (16 months), David’s “mini-me;” three sisters, Carolyn Weary Jones of Elk Grove, Nellie Weary Bell of Bogalusa, and Linda Weary of Yuba City, Calif.; one brother, Alphonso “Ricky” Weary of Sacramento; and many favorite nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear, dear friends in Bogalusa, Varnado and Baton Rouge, as well as all over the United States and the world.
The family acknowledges with deep gratitude the many kind thoughts, prayers, cards, phone calls, and other expressions of sympathy and love during this most difficult time. In keeping with her wishes, there will not be a formal service, but we would like everyone to join us in celebrating her life with wonderful memories of her. She will be missed.
