The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating an incident that took place Tuesday, when the burned body of a man was discovered in a room at the Budget Inn on Austin Street.

Brant Thompson, chief deputy for the State Fire Marshal’s Office, said that the case is under investigation and few details are currently being released.

“We responded to a call just before 4:30 p.m. that afternoon,” Thompson said. “(The deceased) was an adult male subject and the fire damage was confined to that actual (motel) unit. There was no extension into other units or any adjacent rooms.”

Thompson said that an autopsy procedure was conducted Wednesday, and the Fire Marshal’s Office sent investigators to attend that procedure.

“We have some preliminary findings there, but are not prepared to discuss them at this time,” he said. “We have toxicology reports pending, and we have some evidence that is being processed at our crime lab with the Louisiana State Police.”

Thompson said that his office is working with the Bogalusa Police Department, Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and other agencies on the case. He is also seeking surveillance footage and any witnesses who may have information about the incident.

“We would urge anyone with information about this case to contact us,” Thompson said. “They can do so anonymously, via our website (sfm.dps.louisiana.gov) 24 hours a day. We have an online tip application on the home page that will immediately send a message out to the detective working on that particular incident.”

Thompson said that it could take several weeks before a completed report is available from the crime lab.
