Parish issues Hurricane Nate update; shelters will open at 5 p.m.

The Washington Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) issued an update Saturday morning considering the potential danger from Hurricane Nate.

The update is as follows:

All residents should have preparations in place by early afternoon. Hurricane Nate is currently a Category 1 with winds of 90 mph and is forecasted to come ashore as a Category 2 around 7 p.m. tonight with winds of 105 mph.

Our area remains under a tropical storm warning with a 50-80 percent chance of receiving tropical storm force winds of 39 mph or greater.

Sandbag operations in Washington Parish will continue until 4 p.m. this evening at:

  • Washington Parish Fire District No. 7, 17380 Bill Booty Road, Bogalusa.
  • Washington Parish Public Works, 801 Pearl St., Franklinton
  • Washington Parish Public Works, Highway 10/YACC Road, Franklinton

Two shelters will open at 5 p.m. today for citizens who do not feel safe in their homes. Please make plans to be in the shelter before dark.

  • Franklinton High School gymnasium, 1 Demon Circle, Franklinton
  • ESM United Methodist Church family life center, 510 Ave. B, Bogalusa
