A 71-year-old Angie woman died from injuries shortly after a two-vehicle crash south of Varnado on Friday, according to Trooper Dustin Dwight of the Louisiana State Police. A second victim, a 66-year-old woman from Angie, died Sunday.

Dwight said that at approximately 9:51 p.m. on Friday, troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to the crash, on Louisiana Highway 436-1 south of Varnado. The crash claimed the life of Hazel Marie Caruso, 71, of Angie.

The preliminary on-scene investigation led troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Caruso was driving a 2006 Toyota Camry southbound on Highway 436-1, Dwight said. Caruso’s vehicle reportedly traveled into the northbound lane, directly into the path of a 2014 Nissan Juke, driven by Josie Leslie Hartzog, 66, of Angie. The two vehicles crashed head-on.

Caruso was not wearing her seatbelt, Dwight said. She was severely injured in the crash and was subsequently airlifted from the scene in critical condition. During the flight, Caruso experienced complications and succumbed to her injuries.

Hartzog and two of her passengers were all wearing their seatbelts. They suffered minor to moderate injuries in the crash and were transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital by ambulance. Hartzog died Sunday at STPH.

As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were collected from both drivers. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
