A Louisiana Department of Corrections (DOC) investigation landed a corrections cadet in jail Monday for smuggling drugs into the Rayburn Correctional Center, according to information released by the DOC.

During questioning, Kaleb Powe, 19, of Carriere, Miss., confessed to delivering packages of synthetic marijuana three times to the prison over the past four weeks. He admitted to receiving $400 to smuggle the drugs into the prison.

Corrections officers immediately notified the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, and deputies booked Powe with one count of introduction of contraband into a penal institution.

“We will continue to crack down on drug and contraband smuggling,” said Department of Public Safety and Corrections Secretary James M. Le Blanc. “We will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.”

Prison administrators terminated Powe following the arrest. He was a probationary employee who had worked at the RCC since Jan. 17.

The investigation is still ongoing, with more arrests expected.
