Nellie Byers Training Center has been addressing the special-needs population in Bogalusa for 70 years. It offers programs geared to promote the general welfare of developmentally challenged adults, training for practical job skills and appropriate work behaviors, individual-centered plans to meet the specific needs of every client, age-appropriate Life Skills training that include activities that address important concepts in Social Skills, and much more.
Clients work in supervised groups performing janitorial work for businesses and grounds maintenance for businesses, private homes, and cemetery plots.
The facility-based clients’ work includes recycling aluminum cans and Mardi Gras beads, assembling logo buttons, and shredding confidential documents for banks and other businesses.
Now Nellie Byers is in the midst of a membership drive and is asking everyone who wants to be a part of their mission to send a tax-deductible $20 donation to “Nellie Byers, 640 Avenue, Bogalusa, LA, 70427.”
And, for anyone who has never been to the center, there will be an “Open House” from 9 a.m. through 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6.
“Please plan to enjoy punch and cookies with the amazing clients and dedicated staff,” director Beth Schilling said. “Come learn what wonderful things are happening at Nellie Byers. See you there.”
