A 53-year-old Franklinton man was killed Thursday afternoon, after he was hit by a vehicle while working outside in Tangipahoa Parish.

According to Trooper Dustin Dwight, public information officer for Louisiana State Police Troop L, troopers responded to a pedestrian fatality crash on Louisiana Highway 16 near Louisiana Highway 445 in Amite shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday. The crash claimed the life of Franklinton resident Raymond H. Smith, Dwight said.

Dwight said that the initial investigation led troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Marcela Irene Miller, 26, of Hammond, was driving a 2010 Ford Escape westbound on Highway 16. Smith was working with a lawn maintenance crew at a private residence adjacent to Highway 16.

Dwight said that Smith was working on the shoulder of the roadway near the right fog line, when he was struck by the Escape. Smith sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. Miller was properly restrained and was uninjured.

The investigation is ongoing and any criminal charges will be forwarded to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney’s Office pending the completion of the investigation, Dwight said.
