Humane Society sponsors shoe drive

The Magnolia Chapter of the Humane Society of Louisiana needs your shoes, and the goal is to collect 2,500 pairs by May 15.

The volunteer group, which works to better the lives of animals in Washington Parish and the surrounding areas, is collecting men’s, women’s and children’s used, gently worn and new shoes as a fundraiser.

“Since we receive no funding from any government source, we depend entirely on donations and fundraisers in order to continue to rescue abandoned cats and dogs, and to help the City of Bogalusa maintain a no kill shelter,” said Kay Grantham, Magnolia’s secretary/treasurer. “We are excited about the level of community involvement we are seeing.”

She said everyone could do something to help.

“There are many opportunities for volunteers,” Grantham said. “At this time we are in great need of foster homes. The Magnolia Chapter provides all veterinary care for a foster animal. The foster parents provide the love.

“And if you are looking for a new furry family member, contact a shelter or rescue group. You will find exactly what you are looking for. We have contacts with many other rescue groups and we can help.”

She urged everyone to spay or neuter the pets they already have, and said the Magnolia Chapter offers a low cost spay/neuter program for cats and dogs.

Grantham said donations of time, money, supplies are all needed, and that action could be a simple as sharing social media posts about current needs and available dogs and cats.

“So clean out your closets and join us in making Washington Parish a place where we are all proud of the way we treat our companion animals,” Grantham said.

Drop off sites are available at The Daily News, 525 Avenue V, in Bogalusa or at Magnolia Thrift, 70271 Hwy. 59, Abita Springs. Call Grantham at 985-335-0758 if other arrangements are needed.
