Senior health fair set for today

The Washington Parish Council on Aging is holding a health fair today for all area senior citizens.

The fair is an opportunity for anyone aged 60 or above to get free screenings and information about Medicare and other services.

“The fair is designed to increase health awareness through education and prevention for seniors in our community,” said Summer Sammons, an administrative assistant with the Council on Aging.

In particular, the fair offers seniors an opportunity to talk with Council on Aging staff about what services the council provides. The fair also provides space to other area caregivers and service providers.

Sammons said Medicare Part D information will also be available. Medicare Part D is a program that underwrites the cost of certain medications and there are a variety of plans available depending on qualifications. Sammons said if seniors want to sign up, they can reserve a time to do that at the fair. Seniors must sign up now through Dec. 7 if they hope to have coverage in 2017.

Finally, the fair will also offer traditional health and wellness screenings, flu shots, giveaways and refreshments.

The fair will kick off at 9 a.m. and wrap up at 12:30 p.m. and it will be held at the newly re-opened Bogalusa offices at 603 Willis Ave.

Any seniors that need transportation can call the transportation department at 985-732-6868 or 732-6869 to schedule a ride. For questions, call Sammons at 985-839-4535.
