The Washington Parish School System School Board met Thursday for their monthly meeting.

According to Sharon Mizell, the administrative assistant to Superintendent Darrell Fairburn, the board approved routine measures, including the meetings schedule for 2017 and a notice for a public meeting on Dec. 8 to discuss and consider a resolution to call an election. The board also adopted an update to its policies and heard two accounting reports.

Mizell said the majority of the meeting was spent on two updates — one from Stacey Breaud on the Read 180 program and then another report from Leslie Hodges regarding the Early Childhood Community Network.

Hodges, the early childhood coordinator for the school district, said the ECCN is a network of daycare, Head Start and school programs for children from their infancy through pre-kindergarten.

“We successfully completed our first coordinated enrollment last spring, and we’re making plans for next April to improve it,” Hodges said in an interview after the meeting. “We’re going to advertise our services on a billboard as you come into Franklinton. We’re going to make sure that the families in Franklinton are aware of our services for children with special needs.”

Hodges said parents of any pre-kindergarten age child could take advantage of the program, though the programs do offer testing and additional resources for special needs children. To find out more, call the district at 985-839-7793.

Hodges said the partnerships have worked well in the last year, and all partners are teaching from the same program — Creative Curriculum by Teaching Strategies.
