On Wednesday, Patricia Newman stopped by the Bogalusa American Legion hall to sign copies of her book, Warriors’ Own Words, “You Had To Be There.”

Newman is a social worker at the veterans’ outpatient clinic in Bogalusa, and the book is a collection of the stories from 19 area veterans. Newman said all but one of those 19 were residents of Washington Parish.

Newman explained that she tells veterans that sharing their stories can be part of the healing process, but also the stories are important.

“They need to tell their stories so other generations will know their stories,” she said.

She said three veterans fought in World War II, one fought in Korea, 15 served in Vietnam and three in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Dozens of Legionnaires and their friends and family turned out for the morning event, and Newman said the response has been wonderful.

Anyone interested in purchasing the book can get a copy at www.thebookpatch.com. The book is $15.
