Burnell Powell Jr.

Burnell Harris Powell Jr., a resident of Denham Springs, 88, born March 6, 1928, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Carpenter House in Baton Rouge. He loved The Lord and his family.
He is survived by his wife Josephine Powell of Denham Springs; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harry Lynn and Caroline Powell of Bogalusa, and Lewis Ray and Shannon Powell of Franklinton; daughter-in-law and husband, Ann and Earl Forrest of Mt. Hermon; a sister-in-law, Annie Belle Powell of Crossroads, Miss.; eight grandchildren, Brian Powell, Richard Powell, Kathryn Fortenberry, Darren Powell, Rebecca Roberts, Brandi Piediscalzo, Laura Varnado and Robert Powell; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Webb Powell of New Iberia, his son, Willie Earl Powell of Franklinton, his parents, Lois and Burnell Powell Sr. of Bogalusa, his great-granddaughter, Dana Varnado of Mt. Hermon, his step-son, Glynn Coleman of Denham Springs, and his brother, Ray Powell of Crossroads.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving in World War II in 1946. He retired from Texaco Oil Corporation after 34 years of service. He was an avid LSU fan. He was also a loving husband, father and grandfather.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m., at New Covenant Baptist Church in Denham Springs.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Covenant Church Mission Fund.
