A Washington Parish man was arrested and charged with arson this week, according to information from the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, a resident of Red Bird Lane, south of Bogalusa off of Highway 21, reported that his vehicle was on fire. The vehicle was a total loss.

The resident reportedly had a deer camera and was able to identify Steve Oalmann, the resident’s next door neighbor, walking in the direction of the vehicle.

After questioning by WPSO deputies, Oalmann confessed to setting the fire. He said he and the vehicle’s owner had a previous argument about a dog.

While questioning Oalmann, deputies also asked him about another incident on May 19 when someone placed a dead rabbit on the hood of the same vehicle. Deputies questioned Oalmann also about a May 22 incident when the same vehicle was vandalized. Oalmann confessed to both incidents.

Oalmann was charged with simple arson and felony criminal damage.

During questioning, Oalmann reportedly told WPSO deputies that he could not read or write.

He has a previous arrest in August 2006 for arson.
