Letter carriers are once again gearing up to take away more than mail, as Saturday will be the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

As always, the food drive will benefit local citizens. Gene Hayman, the volunteer president of the Bogalusa Help Center, said he hopes residents are generous this year.

“We feed over 500 families a month from Bogalusa, Varnado and Angie,” he said. “And the more donations we get, the less money we have to spend.”

The help center is open for distribution each Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon and is located at 350 Martin Luther King Drive.

Hayman said any food will do, so long as it is canned or packaged.

“The post office has bags and they’ll give bags to people and people can put food in the bag and leave it by their mailbox,” he said. “The letter carriers will do it all for them.”

Hayman said he’s hoping the food drive will collect between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds of food.
