Leona Crain

Leona Slocum Crain, 93, of Thomas, died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday April 23, 2016, at her son’s home.

She was a longtime active member of Crain’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church that enjoyed working in her yard and tending her flowers. She also loved working in her garden and growing vegetables that she then canned to share with family and friends. Leona was always a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by: three sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell Crain of Franklinton, Roy and Flo Crain of Sun, and Larue and Charlotte Crain of Thomas; three grandchildren and spouses, Brad and Bonnie Crain, Kathy Crain, and Nicole and Nathanial Sumrall; four great-grandchildren, Allie Crain, Carley Crain, Joseph Sumrall and Colton Sumrall; a sister, Edna Nobles of Bogalusa; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, D.C. Crain; her mother, May Freeman Slocum; father and step-mother, James M. “Bud” Slocum and Naziel Cooper Slocum; daughter-in-law, Nell Crain; grandson, Jason Crain; four sisters, her twin Viola Slocum, Bessie Gerald, Eva Gerald and Gladys McKenzie; and four brothers, Jesse Slocum, Wilbur Slocum, Devon Slocum and Leo Slocum.

Visitation was at Crain Funeral Home on Monday, April 25, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Visitation continued Tuesday at Crain Creek Missionary Baptist Church from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. A funeral service was held in the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Elder Edward Penton and Elder Richard Magee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were J.W. Gerald, Bennie Buff, Greg Nobles, Herman Slocum, James Slocum and Geary McKenzie.
