Library offers free computer class

The Bogalusa Branch Library is set to offer free basic computer courses.

The courses begin Tuesday, Feb. 23, and the first one runs from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“It’s just a basic computer class,” said Alan Gray, the assistant manager of the library. “It’ll tell you about the mouse and the Internet and so forth.”

Dawn Cambre, the librarian who is teaching the course, said it is open to all.

“It’s for whoever wants to come,” she said. “Usually I get older people who are in there, because they’re the ones who need to learn how to use the mouse and get the feel of the computer and an understanding of the computer.”

Cambre pointed out that many activities are done online these days, so it’s important to be able to navigate that world.

“Most of the times when you’re trying to send in an application in you cant just walk in with a piece of paper anymore, you have to send in something with an email,” she said.

Cambre said the course would touch on desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets.

“Anybody who needs help with computers, I try to help them out,” she said.

This isn’t the first time the library has offered computer courses.

“We’ve been doing these for the past couple of years,” Gray said. He added that turnout has been good, and community demand has driven the library to continue the courses.

“A lot of people call about it,” he said.

Gray said anyone can attend, even without a library membership.

“They just need to call ahead so we can get them on the list, so we can get their phone numbers and so we can call them if there’s a cancellation or something,” he said.

However, Cambre said that due to limited computers, the course can only accommodate 10 people, so she encouraged people to sign up early.

Each course will be on a Tuesday, and the course will be taught once a month. She said the course will likely be every third Tuesday, but that’s not certain yet.
