Bogalusa man killed in wreck

A Bogalusa man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday evening, according to information from the Louisiana State Police.

According to a State Police press release, Maurice Cooper, 24, of Bogalusa was killed in the accident on Louisiana Highway 16, north of Louisiana Highway 22 in Livingston Parish. The wreck occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Cooper was traveling southbound on Highway 16 in a 2001 Nissan Maxima. At the same time, Jeremy Hebert, 31, of Denham Springs, was traveling northbound on Highway 16 in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck. For unknown reasons, Cooper’s vehicle crossed the center line into the northbound lane and struck Hebert’s vehicle head-on.

Cooper was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office.

Hebert and his passenger were properly restrained and received moderate injuries. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash. A toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
