Trees fall during heavy storms

The past weekend’s rains caused at least five trees to fall on roadways in Bogalusa.

One of the uprooted trees was on the corner of Grove Avenue and Ott Street. Oddly enough, that particular tree played a prominent role in the deaths of two Bogalusa men on July 6.

Donnie Ishman and his cousin, Dominic Ishman, were killed after their Crown Victoria struck the tree. The Ishmans were reportedly involved in a shootout with Christopher Smith of Bogalusa, who was driving a Honda Civic. Smith was injured in the crash and transported to an area hospital.

Bogalusa Public Works Director James Hall said Monday that Sunday’s rains caused havoc on streets that had already begun road improvements.

“The tree involved in the drive-by shooting was on the list to be cut, but hadn’t been because of the police investigation. Mother Nature took care of it Sunday night,” Hall said. “The heavy rains also caused a lot of extra potholes. We’re working on Rio Grande Avenue in front of Cassidy Park (Monday). That part had already been milled in getting it ready for an overlay.”

Hall said another tree fell across Davenport Avenue. He said there were at least three other major fallen trees, in various parts of the city.
