Parish to hold final tax meeting

The Washington Parish Council has the third and final public meeting on Monday, Dec. 28 to discuss a proposed ordinance to revising an occupational license tax on the pursuit of business in the parish.

The first two special meetings to discuss the issue were on Dec. 17 and Dec. 21.

Washington Parish currently charges $25 for an occupational license tax. The proposed ordinance is an attempt by the parish to fall in line with the rest of the state.

In other business at its Dec. 14 meeting, the council:

• Adopted the 2016 Annual Operating Budget and the Capital Outlay Budget.  The beginning Fund Balance for the Operating Budget is $7,309, 656 that is expected to generate $21,605,375. The proposed ending Fund Balance is $7,163,481.

• Adopted a resolution approving elections on April 9, 2016 in Parish Fire District 2 to set new millage in the hope of generating $400,000.

• Approved a resolution for the election in Parish Fire District No. 1 to renew millage. The election will be on April 9, 2016.

• Engaged Kushner Lagraise LLC for the parish’s audit services.

• Approved the budget for the Washington Parish Tourism Commission.

• Approved a $1 million line of credit for Riverside Medical Center for issuance, sale, and delivery of Certificates of Indebtedness.

• Appointed Raymond Fisher to the Washington Parish Fire District Board to a five-year term replacing Walter Smith.

• Approved the resignation of Levi Lewis from the Tourism Commission. He recently was elected to the Parish Council to represent District 4.
