Homegoing of the Rev. Dr. Alfonso Solomon Nelson. Alpha Feb. 5, 1927 — Omega Dec. 15, 2015.

The celebration of his life and legacy will be Monday, Dec. 21, at the church he served as the pastor for 50 years, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, located at 64115 Jones Creek Road in Varnado, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Willie Gable will officiate.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 20, at the chapel of Crain and Sons Funeral Home, 809 E. Third St. in Bogalusa, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 58 years, Aline Young Nelson of Bogalusa; sons, James (Diane) Nelson of Pokomo, Md., Theo (Sylvia) Nelson of Varnado, Alfonso Nelson of Denham Springs; daughter, Tammy (Mark) Bless of Omaha, Neb.; god-daughter, Rachel Weary of Abita Springs; sisters, Rosemary Crosby-Broughton of Gulfport, Miss., Miss Ruby Harris-Craft of Bogalusa; a host of grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and church family.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Octavia Nichols-Millendar; mother, Jeffrey Odeal Nelson-Young; brother, Joe Louis Nelson; sisters, Ruth Brumfield and Irma Ross; and daughter, Amy Nelson Brumfield.

Interment will be in the Bogalusa Cemetery.
