Alvin Burt

Alvin Burt, 93, born March 3, 1922 in Bogalusa, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015.

Alvin, along with his 10 siblings, was raised on Burt Hill where they helped their parents, Will and Lucy Burt on their farm. Alvin was baptized at Union Avenue Baptist Church at the age of 13. He graduated from Bogalusa High School and joined the Army and later attended Louisiana State University. Alvin married Frances Givens and they had two children, Donna and Chris. Alvin and his family attended Monroe Street Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school.

Alvin worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Co., and owned B&W Service Station and Burt’s Mobil Service Station on Columbia Street. He and his wife Frances had an antique shop. Alvin was a bus driver for the Bogalusa School System from 1960 until he retired in 1983. Alvin was also an insurance agent for National Life and Accident.

After the passing of his first wife Frances, Alvin joined the Jeans and Queens square dancing group and he met Margie Talley Kahl. They married and settled in Bush. Alvin joined Hebron Baptist Church and served as a Deacon for 28 years. Alvin and Margie traveled to every state in the union and each province in Canada. While they traveled the nation, they helped build churches through a mission organization.

Alvin belonged to the Magic City Masonic Lodge and the Sun Masonic Lodge, with over 50 years of service. He served as Master Union twice. Alvin was also a member of the American Legion Post #24 and the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Posse.

Alvin is survived by his son, Alvin Christopher “Chris” Burt; four grandchildren, Kimber (Larry) Mixon, Summer (Rusty) Stewart, Amber (Caleb) Bell and Scott (Meagan) Burt; nine great-grandchildren, Baylee Mixon, Savannah Mixon, Scout Sandifer, Sawyer Sandifer, Lillian Bell, Avery Bell, Brylee Bell, Braxten Burt and Conner Burt; one brother, Edward Burt; one sister Hueylene (Ben) Jordan; three brothers-in-law, Wade Talley, Arnold Ray Lee and Bill Fornea; one son-in-law, Elmo Seal; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Lucy Burt; his first wife, Frances Burt; his second wife, Margie Burt; a daughter, Donna Burt Seal; a brother, Steve Burt; and seven sisters, Lulla Bell Rogers, Juanita Smith, Maxie Callahan, Doris Lee, Mary Miller, Evie Bickham and Nell Burt.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Miller, Ed Jordan, Billy Burt, Bill Dodds, Gibb Smith, Mark Smith and Jimmy Guttierrez.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home beginning at 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m.

The visitation resumed after 8 a.m. Wednesday until service time at 11 a.m. The services were conducted by Rev. Matthew C. Smith and the interment followed in the Burt Family Cemetery.

Military honors were presented by Bogalusa’s Magic City American Legion Post No. 24.
