Brody Schilling, a Bowling Green School senior, recently attended the American Legion Boys State Program at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. Brody is the son of Mechelle Fleming Schilling and Scott Schilling. He is the grandson of Jennifer and Franklinton Mayor Wayne Fleming.

The objective of Boys State is to educate youth in the duties, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. The program teaches the practical mechanics of government by actually performing the functions of local, parish and state elected officials. Brody served as a member of a city council.

“My city council spent long nights trying to bring in more business and increase the population of our city,” Schilling said. “Most nights we stayed up until early morning making sure our plans were exact and successful.

“The Boys State Program was crazy fun at times, but it was also serious, and a great learning experience.”

Brody was sponsored by American Legion Homer Magee Post 113 of Franklinton and the Franklinton Rotary Club. He recently spoke to both groups to relate his experiences and to thank each for their support in making this week-long experience possible.
