Silas Kennedy

Silas Kennedy, 88, of Hattiesburg, Miss., died Monday morning, Aug. 24, 2015, at his home.

He was a longtime resident of the Stateline Community and a charter member of Briarwood Baptist Church. He had currently been attending Heritage United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg.

Silas was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II who enjoyed gardening. He was principal of Pine High School for 12 years and was the owner/operator of Kennedy’s Decorating for eight years.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Mavon Pace Kennedy of Hattiesburg; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Craig and Janet Kennedy of Abita Springs and Ben Kennedy of Covington; a daughter, Hope Kennedy Maples of Hattiesburg; nine grandchildren and spouses, Julie Brown, Will Kennedy, Carrie Kennedy, Luke and Kaye Kennedy, Blake and Nicole Kennedy, Maggie Kennedy, Kirk Maples, Mallory Maples and Hayes Kennedy; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Betty Crain Kennedy of Bogalusa, and Sue and Hershel Kennedy of Stateline; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brad Kennedy; parents, William Wilbur Kennedy and Lena Crain Kennedy; son-in-law, Tim Maples; two brothers, Paul Kennedy and Clint Kennedy; and three sisters, Myrtle Vince, Ozzie Stogner and Oveda Williams.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Kennedy and the Rev. Eric Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Briarwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stevie Kennedy, Dale Williams, Reggie Kennedy, Danny Cibic, William Stogner, Mike Williams, Shelton Stogner and Wade Fornea. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Luke Cowan Sunday school class of Heritage Methodist Church.
