Edith B. Powell

Edith Louise Burns Powell was born on Aug. 31, 1944, in Bogalusa. Education, family and faith were values taught to her at an early age. Edith affirmed her love of the Lord and gave her life to Christ at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bogalusa. She used her gifts to the serve the Lord as a pianist at Mt. Zion, St. Paul Baptist Church, Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and 2nd Baptist Church. She was most happy volunteering for the church.

After completing Central High School in the Class of ‘61 Edith finished her Bachelor’s of Vocal Music at Southern University in Baton Rouge. She worked as an educator and professor for 42 years in many places.

Edith loved her family and is survived by four daughters, Shawn Powell-Joseph of Haines City, Fla., Kim Abmas of Shreveport, Ona Powell of Dallas, Ruby Powell of Memphis; six grandchildren, Meagan Elizabeth, Katherine Elizabeth, Paige Madison, Virginia Blue, Amilia Renee and David Liam; and sister, Dorothy Ratliff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Powell; daughter, Alicia Nicole; and sister, Baby Girl Burns.

Edith loved life and after a long illness was called home with the Lord on June 6, 2015.

Visitation will be held at Cook-Richmond Funeral Home on Friday, June 12, 2015, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The funeral services will be at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2015. Interment will take place immediately after at Bogalusa Cemetery with repast to follow.
