District A City Councilwoman Gloria Kates said Saturday’s District A Cleanup Day will focus on the city’s nuisance ordinances.

“The theme for District A Cleanup Day will be geared toward the importance of our awareness and accountability of our environment and surroundings,” Kates said. “It will be geared toward our nuisance ordinances pertaining to trash, weeds and wild growth. We’re trying to emphasize state statutes regarding nuisance ordinances.”

District A extends north to City Limits Road, south to Second Avenue, east to Austin Street and west to parts of North Columbia Road.

Kates requests volunteers to meet her at 1012 Poplas St. at 8 a.m. on May 2. There will be two shifts during the cleanup. The first shift goes from 8 a.m. to noon, while the second shift is from noon to 4 p.m.

Volunteers need trash bags, safety signs, heavy-duty gloves, buckets for sharp objects, insect repellent, ice chests, drinking water and tools such as rakes, shovels and ropes.

“Cleanup Day is important in order to establish an accountability for your property,” Kates said. “It will perhaps even increase your property value. Most importantly, the cleanup will set a good example to the children and teach them not to litter.”
