The track season is reaching its climax.

Last Thursday and the first part of this week, local track athletes have been competing in their district meets in an attempt to reach the regionals or South State, depending on what association the school belongs to.

The top four finishers from each event advance to the next round in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools.

Bogalusa, Franklinton, Varnado, Pine and Mt. Hermon are members of the LHSAA while Bowling Green School and Ben’s Ford Christian School are in the MAIS.

Our parish was very successful in the district meets, as a large number of athletes moved on. A handful of them captured their events at the district level.

Two athletes won Most Valuable Player awards at the district meets, including Pine’s Derrick Dillon and Franklinton’s Peter Williams.

Dillon was the overall MVP of the District 8-2A Meet, which was Monday, while Williams took home field MVP honors in the District 8-4A event Tuesday.

Also, Franklinton captured its district meet in team points.

Both were held at the St. Scholastica Academy Sports Complex in Covington after having solid performances.

For Ben’s Ford and Bowling Green, the field portion of the South State Meet was Wednesday and the running events are Saturday at Silliman Institute.

At the regional and South State meets, athletes will be attempting to qualify for the state meet.

Congratulations to everyone who advanced and good luck in your attempt to qualify for state.
