On Monday Magic City American Legion Post 24 gathered with friends, family and community leaders to honor those who serve daily, those who go beyond the call to make Bogalusa a great place to live.

The leadership of Post 24, consisting of Commander Buddy Fornea and Vice Commander Mike Henley, along with all members of Post 24, moved the audience with their obvious dedication to this nation and those who so unselfishly give of themselves for it.

After prayer and presentation of the colors, worthy recipients who have worked diligently for this fair city came forward to be recognized with a plaque and words of appreciation.

Cullyn Brooks was honored as Educator of the Year; Jeffrey Bergeron was recognized as Policeman of the Year, Bogalusa Police Department; Phillip Varnado was recognized as Deputy of the Year of the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. Citizen of the Year was Cindy Melancon, and Mike Freeman was honored as Firefighter of the Year of the Bogalusa Fire Department. Savannah Miller, a student at Bogalusa High, received the Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship.

Many kind words were spoken over each deserving recipient. Miller said she was honored to be chosen for the post’s scholarship and plans to pursue a degree in special education. Miller will attend Pearl River Community College for two years. She then plans to transfer to the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg to complete her bachelor’s degree.

Miller hopes to join the ranks of the men and women recognized for their contributions by giving back to her community. Special education holds a place in her heart because she had a nephew who passed away at a young age because of heart problems.

“Tanner had downs syndrome, and this helped me in my decision to pursue a career in special education. I want to help other people who are dealing with a disability. I greatly appreciate the Woman’s Auxiliary for allowing me to move a step closer to seeing my dream fulfilled,” Miller said.

The crowd enjoyed a smorgasbord of homemade delicacies after the meeting adjourned.

American Legion Post 24 is a vibrant and active part of the Magic City and invites all servicemen and women to visit and join the post. Meetings are held on the second Monday night of each month at 7 p.
