Despite the threat of downpours, the Barbeque and Cookoff in Cassidy Park last Saturday was a big success.

The event allows participants to show off how well they can cook in a competitive setting, and those in attendance had the chance to sample the food.

What’s the only thing better in Louisiana than food? The only thing is more food and different types of food.

Those in attendance were treated to both. Crowds were able to eat seafood, fowl, beef, pork and wild game.

The event drew nine teams, and the squads put a variety of food together for those attending the event.

The best part of the event may have been in the beginning of it, as the day got off to a great start.

It began with the dedication of a swing, which is tailor-made for disabled children.

Katie Breland-Hughes raised the funds for the installation of the swing.

The swing is located near the splash pad and other playground equipment.

This event is one of the great things about spring. Even though we do experience our share of rain and heat, the weather is normally nice.

This time of year is a chance for people to get outside and enjoy social events like this one, festivals and other types of events that bring people together.

In fact, for high school sports, during the spring, everything sporting event is played outside.

Right now in our parish, athletes are competing in baseball, softball, golf, track and field and tennis.

So continue to support events like the cookoffs, the local high school games and other events in the area. Those competing appreciate it, and you’ll have a good time doing so.
