Dannie Phillip Garrett Jr., 69, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge with family at his bedside.

He was born the oldest son of Dannie Phillip Garrett Sr. and Mildred Bankston Garrett on Sept. 1, 1946, in Franklinton. He was a longtime resident of Baton Rouge and most recently Prairieville, where he owned and operated his businesses, Fireplace Wholesale and Pelican Land Service.

Phillip was an avid outdoorsman, the love of which he learned from his father. He experienced great joy in sharing this passion with many others through the years. He pulled many fish from the waters around Grand Isle and killed more whitetail deer than he could count. It has been said that he knew more about deer than most deer knew about themselves.

Phillip was a proud father of three and a grandfather of seven.

He is survived by his children, Dannie Phillip Garrett III and wife Julie, Dr. Nancy Garrett Hoover and husband Jack and Dr. Paul D. Garrett and wife Rachel; grandchildren, Davis and Griffin Garrett, Noah and Andrew Hoover and Matthew, Anna and William Garrett; siblings, Martha Kane, Sylvia Garrett Dugas, Cecile Green and husband Jeff, David Garrett and wife Susan and Judy Garrett Wise.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dannie Phillip Garrett Sr. and Mildred Bankston Garrett; and a brother-in-law, John W. Kane.

The family would like to thank the donor of Phillip’s lung transplant. This blessing, given in 2006, allowed for Phillip and his family and friends to enjoy more quality time with one another. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Johnny Akers for his friendship and care throughout his illness, as well as Dr. Leo Blaize, Dr. Mark Kantrow and Glenn Landry of the Palliative Care team of Our Lady of the Lake, InHisCare Hospice and the nurses of the RCU unit at Our Lady of the Lake.

Visitation will be held at Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service and then burial alongside his parents in Ellis Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dannie P. Garrett III, Dr. Paul D. Garrett, Jack C. Hoover Jr., David L. Garrett, Jeff S. Green and Dr. Douglas R. Kemp.
