James E. Miller, age 70 and a resident of Varnado, was born on April 10, 1944, in Bogalusa. He went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014. He was a long-time member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Varnado and a retiree of Gaylord Paper Mill.

He is survived by his wife, Julie Patterson Miller of Varnado, and his son, James “Jamie” Miller of Dallas. He is also survived by his brothers, Herbert Culbreath of Bush, Glen Miller of Bogalusa, William Miller of Barker’s Corner and Clyde Miller of Globe, Ariz.; and one sister, Inez Mullins of New Iberia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Mildred Leslie Miller; a daughter, Cathy Miller; a sister, Marie Lacey; and brothers, Dobie, Shelton, Elvin and Loflon Miller.

He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. One of his greatest joys was taking his nephews hunting and teaching them the love of the sport and then watching them instill that same love in their own children. He was as close to sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law as if they were his own family.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Visitation will continue on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home Chapel from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The funeral services will be at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Nelson Bracey officiating. Interment will follow at Pounds Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be his nephews, Elton Lacey Jr., B.G. Miller, Hub Culbreath, Daniel Patterson, Trent Dixon and Bo Peak.
