Get out and support our local athletes

Beginning tonight with the Ben’s Ford Christian School Jamboree, high school football will be played every week in Washington Parish until at least Nov. 7.

Hopefully, there will be more games in Washington Parish after that because that would mean that teams out here are hosting a playoff game.

Tonight’s jamboree features seven teams, including a pair of local squads in Ben’s Ford and Bowling Green.

The jamboree begins at 5 p.m. with the Bowling Green Buccaneers and Dexter playing two halves of 12 minutes each. That game is followed by Prentiss and New Orleans Homeschool at 6 p.m. which will also have two 12-minute halves.

The final three games feature one 12-minute quarter.

Silliman Institute takes on Salem at 7 with Ben’s Ford and Salem at 7:30 and Ben’s Ford going against Silliman at 8 to wrap things up before Ben’s Ford and Bowling Green open up the regular season next week.

Next week, three of the Washington Parish Schools, which are members of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, have their scrimmages before playing in jamborees and then beginning their regular season.

And football isn’t the only sport getting started. Ben’s Ford and Bowling Green are in the middle of their softball seasons, while Franklinton, Varnado and Pine open their volleyball seasons in early September.

So as we start the school year, there are a variety of sports to choose from.

The student-athletes you see playing in these games are representing their schools and admission is reasonably priced.

Whether you are a parent, family member or friend of one the players or you’re just a fan of local prep sports, head on over to a local field or gym and support the local student-athletes.
