New graduate earns $500 boost for college studies

Rashard Smith, a 2014 graduate of Bogalusa High School, is the recipient of the Frank E. Stokes Memorial Scholarship.

The selection is made by a group of local veterans, who present the $500 scholarship to a student who exemplifies certain qualities.

“We look for positive young people who can make a difference in our community,” said Marvin Austin Sr. of Bogalusa.

Smith is the 17-year-old son of Eric and Vanessa Smith and the grandson of Jerome and Celeste Young, Ann Short-Smith and David and Diane Smith.

While attending Bogalusa High, he was a member of the basketball team, culinary department and Future Farmers of America.

He also serves as president of Zion Chapel Youth Department, as a junior trustee and as vice president of the Central New Orleans, Bogalusa district, youth department of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

In addition, he volunteers at Project Hope Golf Camp and Community Camp.

He plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
