Adolph Edward Asher, 97, passed away Friday, Nov. 29, 2013.

He was born in New Orleans on March 28, 1916, and was described as somebody you’d have to meet. He started working at age 13, unloading banana boats to support his family during the depression. He served proudly in the U.S. Army under Gen. George Patton, and one of his greatest joys was telling war stories about his combat experience.

After World War II, he married the love of his life, his sweet Ruth Goldman, and began a life in Bogalusa, where he was a successful merchant for 40 years. He was a great friend to all who knew him, enjoying Lumberjack football (especially 1966-1968), Tulane football, gin rummy, craps, golf, Jack Daniels and being a great dad and husband. He returned to New Orleans in the 1980s to be near his family. In New Orleans he thrived on the adventures of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth; his children, Marilyn and Joe Kline, Harold and Carol Asher and Eilene and Barry Spizer; his grandchildren, Steven, Nancy, Alli, Mark, Adelaide, Jeff, Allison and Jason; and great-grandchildren, Henry and Edward.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1 from Hebrew Rest Cemetery No. 1 (Frenchmen St. entrance) at 11 a.m., with Rabbi Robert Loewy officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Youth Endowment Project (YEP), 1604 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70113 or Congregation Gates of Prayer, 4000 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie, LA 70002.
