Burlon Wesley Reid, 70, died Friday, June 28, 2013, at his residence in Poplarville, Miss.
He was recently retired from a career in education spanning 48 years. He began his career in the Pearl River (Miss.) Central School District, taught for 30 years in the Bogalusa City School System and finished his career in the Pearl River Central School District. He was an alumnus of The University of Southern Mississippi and Southeastern Louisiana University. He was a member of College Heights Baptist Church, attended the Barn Church and was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Bertie Brock Reid; one daughter, Robin Jill Reid; and five brothers, Ray Reid, Robert Reid, Alvin “Scooby” Reid, Charles Reid Jr. and Clinton Reid.
Survivors include his wife 43 years, Chris Reid of Poplarville; three sons, Steve (Kelly) Reid of Poplarville, Scott (Sarah) Reid of Petal, Miss. and David Reid of Poplarville; two sisters, Dorothy Verrett and Nell Herndon, both of Poplarville; seven grandchildren, Maci Reid, Hannah Reid, Rachel Reid, Lizzy Reid, Makena Reid, Olivia Reid and Coleman Reid; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, former students and colleagues.
Visitation was held Monday, July 1, at White Funeral Home in Poplarville from 6-9 p.m., and continued on Tuesday at College Heights Baptist Church, 217 Highway 11 North in Poplarville, from 9 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 10 a.m., with Brother Jeff Easterling, Brother Mike Reid and Brother Walter Pierce officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.
