At its March meeting, held at the Bogalusa Senior Center, members of the Bogalusa Garden Guild was treated to an informative program on container gardening presented by Lee Mizell, horticulturist, grower for Schilling Nursery and also a club member.
Following club business conducted by President JoAnne Polk, Secretary Rita Clayton and Treasurer Nelda Woodward, members were provided a meal of lasagna, green beens and dessert by hostess Karen Little. Jeniene Bracey offered an Irish blessing for the food.
Mizell, who was introduced by Program Chairman Jackie Boone, gave an interesting and informative program, exhibiting various plant combinations and emphasizing the importance of combining plants that have similar requirements such as sunlight, water and drainage. She suggested experimenting with various color combinations using upright plants and trailing plants in the same container.
The horticulture hint was given by Sydney Hughes who recommended adding coffee grounds to garden soil or compost. Hostas, she said, especially benefit from the coffee grounds as it deters slugs.
Rosemary Earls provided an exhibit of potted tropical calla lillies and gave the growing instructions.
The civic report was given by Polk and Linda Pope. The club continues to work with the Magic City Garden Council in replacing the crepe myrtles on Louisiana Avenue, and maintaining the crepe myrtles on Avenue B, as well as those at the east entrance to the city.
Magic City Garden Council members participated in the hanging of the spring wreath at Bogalusa City Hall.
The April program, “Wondrous Lily,” will be presented by Northeast Garden Club member, Pris Sampson.
The door prize, a white Hawthorne furnished by Pope, was won by Regina Hunt.
